Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps has insisted he has no plans of coming out of retirement to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Wednesday night, he may have revealed why.
Phelps attended the ESPYs - ESPN's annual award show - with the Golf Channel's Win McMurry. According to several media reports, Phelps caddied for McMurry during a benefit outing during The Players Championship in May.
McMurry tweeted about the partnership and photos surfaced on several websites. McMurry herself posted a photo on her Instagram account. (See the photo here.)
Phelps is the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time. He has won a total of 22 medals, including an unprecedented 18 gold - double that of the second-place male Olympic gold count of nine, shared by Paavo Nurmi, Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis.
Phelps also holds the record for most gold medals in a single Olympics with eight at the 2008 Beijing Games, for Olympic medals in individual events by a male with 13 and gold medals in individual events with 11.
He retired after the 2012 Games in London, but rumors began to circulate earlier this year that Phelps was aiming to make a comeback and compete in the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Even fellow American and swimming competitor Ryan Lochte predicted that Phelps would swim again in the Olympics.
Phelps put those rumors to rest in June. He interviewed with ESPN's Max Kellerman and Marcus Wiley, telling them he's been doing a lot of golfing lately - which explains the association with McMurry.
Later on, Phelps was a presenter for Male Olympic Athlete of the Year at the Award Show, according to the Baltimore Sun, and when he opened the envelop, his name was on it.
