Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy has likely played his last game with Carolina after the court announces his alleged domestic-violence incident will not be resolved until early 2015.
According to the Charlotte Observer, Hardy’s court date being set in 2015 all but ends his tenure with the Panthers as he will not be able to play while he awaits his day in court. Hardy is currently under the franchise tag and will be an unrestricted free agent if he is allowed to play in the NFL after his legal issues are resolved.
“Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy’s jury trial in his domestic violence case has been postponed from Nov. 17 until early 2015, the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office announced in a statement Tuesday.
The delay in the case means Hardy is not expected to play in the NFL again this season. His Panthers career is likely over as well, according to multiple team sources.”
Hardy is accused of abusing his ex-girlfriend, Nicole Holder, and threatening to kill her. He was found guilty of misdemeanor charges by a judge in July, but he has appealed to a trial by a jury of his peers.
Hardy had registered one sack and a forced fumble in his only start this season and has 34.0 career sacks in 63 career games. Hardy was set to demand a high-priced contract this offseason, as he is seen as one of the NFL’s premier pass rushers, but after this incident it is hard to see a team signing him long-term if they sign him at all.
