The Washington Redskins have made it official, quarterback Colt McCoy will start for the team Monday night in Dallas as Robert Griffin III is not yet healthy enough to make his return.
According to NFL Network national reporter Albert Breer, McCoy was always going to start for Washington and listing Griffin as questionable was just to keep the Cowboys on their toes.
“The Redskins tried to keep everyone guessing by listing Robert Griffin III (ankle) as questionable, but he was never a realistic bet to suit up. It will be the McCoy show on a national stage, leaving the Cowboys defense to lick its chops. In 21 career NFL starts, McCoy has thrown 20 interceptions, fumbled 12 times and taken 55 sacks.
Griffin will either be back for Week 9 against the Vikings or immediately following the Week 10 bye.”
RGIII is expected back for the Redskins either Week 9 or after Washington’s Week 10 bye week. Griffin overcame a mini-quarterback controversy with backup Kirk Cousins after the quarterback played well below average in his limited action this season. Head coach Jay Gruden decided to go with McCoy at halftime of the Redskins 19-17 victory against the Tennessee Titans and hasn’t looked back.
McCoy led the Redskins the victory, including a 70-yard touchdown pass on his first attempt of the season. Griffin is recovering from a dislocated ankle that he suffered earlier this season and lucked out when it was revealed that the dislocation didn't do serious damage to the ligaments in the area.
