There used to be a time when no one questioned whether Tiger Woods could win a golf tournament. Now, not only is he being asked, but he could be suspending disbelief.

Tiger Woods' inconsistency at Bridgestone a sign he can't outwork fellow golfers?

CBSSports.com reported Wednesday that Woods and his back drama arrived at the 2014 PGA Championship expecting to win the event, despite having fewer than three full tournaments under his belt since undergoing back surgery and having to drop out of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational with a back injury.

Woods repaired a pinched nerve in his back on March 31 and missed the Masters and U.S. Open. He finished 67th at the British Open in his second tournament back before having to withdraw at Bridgestone.

But this is Tiger Woods who was asked whether he believes he has a chance to win the PGA Championship.

Tiger Woods says obsessive workouts led to body's breakdown

"Yes," he said, according to CBSSports.com.

Woods said the injury he sustained at Bridgestone, in which he hurt himself trying to hit out of a bad lie, was unrelated to the microdiscectomy surgery he had before the Masters.

"It's not the site of the surgery," Woods told reporters, as CBSSports.com reported. "This is something totally different. As I said when I landed, it jarred it and jarred it loose, made it come out. As I was explaining to you guys last week, I haven't been able to do my agility stuff because I'm still building back up, still playing."

He flew to Louisville, Ky., on Tuesday to play and test the back, rather than on Wednesday as is the custom.

"My range of motion was good," he said and Geoff Shackelford.com transcribed. "I started my firing sequence -- was back to normal -- (and) the sequencing was good. If my sequencing is good then it's all good."

But even at 100 percent, Woods' play of late has been unrelated to that of his run to his 14 major championships.
