New York Giants Select Sam Beal, Washington Redskins Snag Adonis Alexander In NFL Supplemental Draft

The New York Giants and the Washington Redskins bolstered their defense as they selected cornerbacks on Wednesday in the 2018 Supplemental Draft.

The Redskins picked Virginia Tech star Adonis Alexander in the sixth round while the Giants went on to select Sam Beal of Western Michigan in the third round. Other players in this year's supplemental draft were Brandon Bryant of Mississippi State, Bright Ugwoegbu of Oregon State, and running back Martayveus Carter of Grand Valley State.

Despite going undrafted, Bryant, Carter, and Ugwoegbu are qualified to be signed by an NFL team. Sources say that Bryant is expected to sign a deal with the New York Jets.

The National Football League Supplemental draft serves as a second chance for the players who missed the deadline or did not meet the criteria to enter the NFL draft. Every NFL team is given a chance to present their highest bid and the player heads to the top bidder.

Giants Excited About Beal

Team manager Dave Gettleman said that the Giants had a very lengthy discussion before deciding to select Beal in the draft. The 21-year-old Beal who entered the draft this spring impressed scouts on his pro day as he ran a 40-yard dash in the range of 4.5 to go along with an incredible vertical leap of 37.

"We're very, very excited about getting Sam in the draft." Gettleman said.

Beal has been a proven defensive specialist as the All-MAC second-team member tallied two interceptions to go along with one forced fumble, 10 pass break ups and 26 tackles. Prior to taking Jones, the Giants have also selected Dave Brown and Tito Wooten in the 1992 and 1994 supplemental drafts respectively.

Alexander Becomes Second Virginia Tech Player Selected

On the other hand, the 6-foot-2 Alexander became just the second Virginia Tech player to be selected in the supplemental draft after Mike Johnson. Johnson who plays as a linebacker was selected by the Cleveland Browns in 1984 after playing for the Philadelphia Stars and the Baltimore Stars in the USFL.

During Alexander's campus pro day last June, he posted incredible results of 4.61 seconds on the 40-yard dash, 4.39 seconds on shuttle, and 7.18 seconds on the three-cone drill. Alexander played 34 games in his three-year stint with Virginia Tech where he registered 126 tackles, 17 break ups, and seven interceptions.

Alexander joined Tremaine Edmunds, Tim Settle, Wyatt Teller, Greg Stroman, and Terrell Edmunds as the only players to join the league courtesy of the draft. Additionally, the 195-pound star also became just the seventh player to be selected in the supplemental draft in the past decade.
