Gennady Golovkin successfully defended his WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight titles on Saturday against Daniel Jacobs via a narrow unanimous decision win. The undefeated champion wants to unify all the middleweight belts so he would love to fight WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders next.
"GGG" improved his record to 37-0 after the win over "The Magic Man" but it was a very close fight. The judges scored it 115-112, 115-112, 114-113 in favor of Golovkin, much to the dismay of the Madison Square Garden crowd, per ESPN.
The unanimous decision win by Gennady Golovkin ended his 23-fight knockout streak that spanned for nine years. His last decision win came in June 2008 when he defeated Algeria's Amar Amari via an eight-round unanimous decision in Copenhagen, Denmark.
According to The Telegraph, Gennady Golovkin wants his next fight to be in his home country of Kazakhstan against Billy Joe Saunders. There are other options for the 34-year-old middleweight king like a money fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez or a rematch with Daniel Jacobs but he has set his sights to unify the all the division's championships.
The match will likely take place in between June and September in the capital city of Astana. Saunders is ready to defend his title anytime, anywhere and he believes that he has what it takes to defeat Gennady Golovkin.
"In my own head, I know I am capable of beating him. Jacobs isn't in my class when I am on form. Golovkin wants the WBO belt and I am willing to put it on the line. I'll travel anywhere to fight him, I'm not bothered about fighting him in Kazakhstan. I'll fight him in a field for all I care," Saunders said.
Gennady Golovkin is still the most feared boxer in the world today but his "air of invincibility" is gone after his fight with Daniel Jacobs, per Chris Mannix of The Vertical. He pointed out that Golovkin's last two fights - getting hit cleanly by Kell Brook and going the distance with Jacobs - could be a sign that he is slowing down.
Nevertheless, the fans are still amped up to see who Gennady Golovkin will fight next. Many people want a showdown with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez but the two sides can't seem to agree on anything.
