The one takeaway from the mostly forgettable UFC 208 event in Brooklyn was the controversy that surrounded its main event, when Germaine de Randamie hit Holly Holm after the bell on two separate occasions. Recently, the UFC’s first women’s featherweight champion took to Facebook to address the criticisms and offer Holm a rematch.
As noted by Fox Sports, Germaine de Randamie wrote that despite the victory being one of the greatest moments of her life, she could not stop thinking about the controversy surrounding her unanimous victory against Holly Holm, reiterating that she is not a dirty fighter. “I have always trained to fight to the end or until the referee steps in… I have nothing but respect for Holly and the UFC, and because of that I want to say right now that I think I owe it to the [sic] Holly and the fans to do this fight again to make sure that the winner of this historic belt is crystal clear,” wrote on Facebook.
Following the event, UFC president Dana White was clearly disappointed in the event as a whole but also pointed criticism at New York State referee Todd Anderson, saying the referee had no business being in the cage. Holly Holm was likewise critical of the developments, wondering why the referee did not take a point after the second offense, where Germaine de Randamie did not stop punching as the bell rang at the end of the third round.
During her Octagon interview, Germaine de Randamie revealed that she had been fighting with an injured hand. When asked if she was eager to fight clear challenger Cris Cyborg, the new featherweight champion said she had to tend to her injury, which could require surgery. Understandably, Cyborg saw it as an excuse not to fight her, who said she expected either de Randamie or Holly Holm to pile on excuses in order to delay the inevitable fight with her, MMA Mania reported.
