A few years ago, New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis was widely seen as the future of the league. But after another disappointing season that currently sees the Pelicans sitting at 12th in the Western Conference, a rumor has been floated around that there is a possibility that the first-time All-Star starter could possibly team up with Russell Westbrook in a Los Angeles Lakers uniform someday.
In a lengthy feature on how the New Orleans Pelicans front office has failed Anthony Davis, Brian Boyles of Bleacher Report wrote that according to a source close to Davis’ agent, there is a possibility that “the end game could find the two uniting in Los Angeles with the talent-starved Lakers.” As noted by the feature, Anthony Davis is represented by Thad Foucher of the Wasserman Media Group—the same agency that represents Russell Westbrook.
It is certainly a wild rumor, with Anthony Davis returning to his unicorn form averaging 28 points 12 rebounds and 3.2 blocks this season. Russell Westbrook, for his part, is in the midst of a historic individual season, averaging a triple double through 55 games, with per norms of 31.2 points, 10.5 rebounds and 10.2 assists. But the fact that a source close to Anthony Davis’ camp would float such a rumor could be telling of how the transcendent big man sees the state of the New Orleans Pelicans front office.
As pointed out by Silver Screen and Roll, the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement has made it easier for teams to keep their current stars, by enabling them to offer the most money. In 2015, Anthony Davis signed a five-year, $145 million extension that could keep him with the New Orleans Pelicans until 2021. Russell Westbrook, on the other hand, recently signed an extension that keeps him under contract through 2017-18.
