Super Bowl winning coach Tony Dungy is admitting if he were ever to come out of retirement to coach again the Detroit Lions coaching job would be the one he would want.
"I will tell you this, I think the best job out there is the Detroit Lions," Dungy said Friday morning during an interview on the Dan Patrick Show. "That's the job I would want. I think they're closest to the Super Bowl. You look for a franchise quarterback in this day and age, you want to have a passing game because this game is all about passing, and you want people who can rush the passer and protect the lead. Detroit's got all that."
Dungy previously coached in Tampa Bay and led the Indianapolis Colts and Peyton Manning to a Super Bowl title in XLI. Still, he insists his time at coaching the game has come and gone.
Currently an analyst alongside Patrick on NBC's Football Night in America, Dungy noted Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford ranked third in the league this year in total passing yards and yards per game behind only Manning and the Saints' Drew Brees.
"You throw in two really good tight ends, a couple running backs who can make things happen," said Dungy. "They've got everything they need."
Dungy later added "and you've got an owner who doesn't know. He's not going to come in and tell you, 'Play this guy, cut this guy, draft this guy.' It's a perfect situation. If I was ever coming back, it would be for that job."
