Tony Romo has received an epidural injection to treat the inflammation and herniated disk in his lower back in hopes of being able to play against the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday's season finale.

ESPN reports its typically two to three days before doctors can determine if an injection has succeeded. The Cowboys and Eagles face off in Dallas on Sunday with the NFC East title and a postseason berth both on the line.

The procedure is hardly seen as a sure bet for Romo in terms of being able to take the field against the Eagles. ESPN reports one source lamented "I would be very, very surprised if he got back on the field."

Reportedly, Romo has already been advised that he likely need surgery. ESPN adds often doctors who treat patients with epidurals often have to result to multiple injections to achieve noticeable improvement.

Romo reaggravated his back in Week 15's 24-23 win over Washington. The 33-year-old quarterback previously underwent back surgery to remove a cyst from his back earlier this year.
