UFC 316 is turning out to be a blockbuster fight as current bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili is set to take on former titleholder Sean O'Malley in a much-awaited rematch. UFC CEO Dana White has confirmed the bout will top the June 7 pay-per-view at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
In the women's division, Julianna Peña hopes to defend her bantamweight title against Kayla Harrison.
Dvalishvili vs. O'Malley Part Two
Dana White announced that O'Malley (18-2) will have a chance for his redemption tour against Dvalishvili (19-4) in the upcoming June bout, according to MMA Junkie.
The September loss at UFC 306 was unforgettable for O'Malley. After losing the fight, O'Malley got hip surgery and has been recovering. Now, he's looking forward to regaining his title and settling the tie.
The 30-year-old contender O'Malley was on a roll before losing to Dvalishvili. He had just defended his title in a tough decision victory over Marlon Vera, showing he was among the division's best.
In the meantime, Dvalishvili has been on an unstoppable run at 135 pounds. His in-your-face pressure and wrestling excellence have yielded an impressive 12-fight win streak. Last month, he defended his belt against Umar Nurmagomedov with a hard five-round decision.
The Georgian fighter was one of his division's winningest bantamweight martial artists. His hard-driving wrestling and relentless pace have enabled him to win against top-level opponents like former champions Henry Cejudo, Petr Yan, and José Aldo.
Can Julianna Peña Protect Her Bantamweight Title Against Kayla Harrison?
Besides the bantamweight title fight, UFC 316 will host another championship fight as Julianna Peña (11-5) defends the women's bantamweight title against Kayla Harrison (18-1).
According to ESPN, Peña regained her title in October at UFC 307, winning by split decision against Raquel Pennington. Her return to the division's top has positioned her for a highly anticipated showdown with Harrison, a former two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo who has risen through the UFC ranks in short order.
Harrison made a statement in her previous fight, winning a unanimous decision against Ketlen Vieira at UFC 307.
