The NFL is finally granting what some fans want to see soon for their favorite teams. With throwback and alternate jerseys, there's something new to celebrate for classic and new viewers.

Starting this season, teams will be able to use their alternate or old jerseys as many as four times throughout the 17-game regular season, up from three previously.

More Throwback Uniforms for NFL Fans

According to CBS Sports, there are going to be huge throwbacks in action following the NFL's latest implementation of allowing retro uniforms for all football squads.

If you're a fan of the Denver Broncos and you grew up watching the era of Andy Maurer, Billy Bryan, Steve Schindler, and other legends, you will revisit the 1977 uniform. You will get more nostalgic when you see the "Orange Crush" uniform this year.

For Philadelphia Eagles fans, you can see your favorite football players donning the classic Kelly green jerseys from the 1930s.

The shift is just weeks after the NFL renewed its deal with Nike, which will now continue through 2038. The long-term agreement is allowing the league the freedom to experiment with new uniform combinations while still respecting its heritage.

According to the NFL's EVP and Chief Revenue Officer's Renie Anderson, the league is looking at the future to see what players, fans, and coaches want to see for the teams.

What's in the NFL Uniform 'Closet'?

Every NFL team has an allocated "closet" of available uniform combinations, with three categories:

  • Primary Uniforms: The regular home and away jerseys.
  • Alternate Uniforms: There are designs such as Color Rush and other innovative combinations.
  • Throwback/Classic Uniforms: Jerseys that reproduce a team's vintage appearance.

While there are some teams, such as the Kansas City Chiefs, that keep to their classic red and white uniforms without an alternate or throwback, others, such as the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks, have several pairs of jerseys and socks that can be paired together for various styles.

Some Rules For the Throwback and Alternate Jerseys

According to the NFL, there's a new rule change regarding the use of retro and alternate uniforms. Teams have the option to keep on wearing a winning look for extended periods.

A minor but important rule change suggests that the team should wear their alternative pants during the playoffs. Before, only the pants of the base uniform set were allowed during the postseason.

Will NFL Players Wear Throwback or Alternate Jerseys at Super Bowl?

Even with greater flexibility, there is one constant: teams will not be permitted to don their alternate or throwback uniforms in the Super Bowl. The league prefers the biggest game of the year to have a classic appearance, with teams remaining in their base uniforms.
