Former first-overall NBA Draft pick Markelle Fultz played 43 games for the Orlando Magic last season. Although he did not live up to the expectations of others, the 25-year-old guard might soon find a home in LA land.
He remains a free agent, however, currently free to sign with any league team as of Dec. 13. Sources say that Los Angeles is looking for someone who can boost the bench power.
Los Angeles Lakers' Interest in Markelle Fultz
Fultz excels in assisting his teammates on the floor, but his three-point shooting, however, is still a concern, converting on just 22.2% of attempts. As per an article by Anthony F. Irwin of ClutchPoints, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly interested in signing up Markelle Fultz.
"Per sources, the Lakers have had internal conversations about Fultz, the former first-overall pick who hasn't lived up to his draft position but was solid last season playing for the Orlando Magic."
A 13-11 overall record and sitting as the eighth seed in the Western Conference cannot help but have the Lakers struggling, yet Fultz would be all that they need in addition to their current backcourts.
The Lakers have been inconsistent, winning only three of their last ten games. Adding a player like Fultz could bolster their bench and alleviate some pressure on their starting guards. His ability to facilitate, attack the rim, and defend could make him a valuable piece in their rotation, particularly for a team eyeing a deep playoff run.
Career Overview of Fultz
Selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the first overall pick in the 2017 draft, Fultz entered the league with sky-high expectations.
Injuries and shooting issues, however, have stalled his development during his first seven seasons in the NBA. He averages 11.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 47.2% from the field. Still, his three-point shooting at 27.4% is a weakness. However, Fultz has established himself as a reliable playmaker and defender.
Why Fultz Is an Interesting Contender
Though Fultz may not become the All-Star the team once expected him to be, he is a reliable and capable point guard, Sports Illustrated finds. For a team such as the Lakers, who are looking for stability and depth, Fultz could prove to be a low-risk, high-reward signing.
Fultz's ability to affect games through his court vision, defensive instincts, and mid-range shooting makes him an attractive commodity for playoff contenders.
If the Lakers really wanted to push through the deal, they are not only getting Fultz here. In fact, they could also trade their three second-round picks, Christian Wood and Gabe Vincent, for a more efficient big man, which in this case is Jonas Valanciunas.
Jimmy Butler is also rumored to be included in the trade mill, but we still do not know how it will actually work.
