Six former WWE writers have come forward with revelations of atrocious treatment they received while working on popular programs, Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown. These writers said that when Vince McMahon was running the day-to-day creative activities in WWE, they were exposed to a hostile work environment.
Allegations of Verbal Abuse in WWE
The former WWE writers agree that the atmosphere was rotten both in the writers' room and throughout the company.
"We were frequently verbally abused, and we saw aggressive exchanges while working for the company," the writers told Rolling Stone. Whether they were at WWE's headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, or on the road with the organization for its televised programs, hostile conditions seemed to be everywhere.
Former staff also highlighted the clear rift within the company. There were sycophants of WWE that were only there for McMahon and put up with the toxic atmosphere, and outsiders from other branches of entertainment that didn't take long to realize that WWE was not like any other workplace they had ever worked in before.
WWE and Vince McMahon's Defense of the Allegations
While WWE didn't have anything directly to say regarding the content of the Rolling Stone article that first surfaced these claims, one of Vince McMahon's representatives did comment to the subject matter at hand. The reply was as follows, "Scores of writers could share tales of what an enjoyable, creative, and freewheeling environment the WWE writers' rooms were. This handful of (obviously disgruntled) individuals aren't representative in any way of the consensus-or of the truth."
McMahon's camp response seems more focused on a justification of the company culture in general, dismissing and painting the writers' assertions as unrepresentative of the experience most people have in WWE.
WWE Scandals Keep on Surfacing
This is not the first scandal involving inappropriate behavior on the part of WWE, according to CageSide Seats. Tales of sexism, misconduct, and hostile working conditions are only now surfacing.
The controversy most notably surrounds Vince McMahon himself, who was ousted as CEO after a former WWE employee, Janel Grant, filed suit against him for sexual assault and trafficking. He is still under federal investigation, and his long shadow casts a dark pall over the business he built.
These fresh charges from ex-WWE writers add a level of depth to the tale of dysfunction under the stewardship of McMahon, with severe and worrying problems about the working culture in one of the world's most lucrative entertainment firms.
