Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant gave his take on Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark not making the cut for the United States women's national basketball team, which will be competing in the 2024 Summer Olympics next month.
The four-time Olympic gold medalist told The Wall Street Journal that he agreed with the decision not to include the NCAA's all-time leading scorer en route to Paris.
"I still think it's proper steps you gotta take in our world to be considered an Olympian. I think she's gonna definitely be on one of these teams going forward, but right now it's better candidates out there, I think," the Team USA all-time leading scorer stated.
One reason Clark did not make the team was reportedly the fear of backlash from her fans, as she might not receive much playing time due to the more experienced members of the team.
"But Caitlin's just gotta continue to keep showing up every day, and the WNBA is doing a great job of showcasing her. I'm seeing her games on ESPN every other day," the 2014 NBA Most Valuable Player added.
Kevin Durant happy with the state of women's basketball
Durant expressed appreciation for the state of women's basketball today, where it has reached unprecedented popularity and revenue.
"I've seen talks around - no matter what they're talking about, there's a lot of dialogue around the game right now, so that's good as well," the two-time NBA Finals MVP declared.
For instance, this year's NCAA women's tournament, where Clark played, outperformed the men's tournament in viewership.
