Arsenal finished second in the last two consecutive Premier League seasons after not reaching the Champions League from 2017 to 2022.

The success is largely attributed to the arrival of Mikel Arteta.

They did improve, but they haven't had major success.

Club legend Jens Lehmann recently expressed skepticism about the club's future under the tutelage of the Spanish boss.

Lehmann, who played goalkeeper for the Gunners from 2003 to 2008 and was part of the legendary Invincibles, does not think Arteta can take the team to the next level.

"Arteta has done really well bringing Arsenal up but if he is the right man for Arsenal now, I am not sure," he told The Telegraph.

"Because you need to prove it. We could have won [the league] twice. Last year they were leading and in one month [April] they lost it [three draws and one defeat]."

He also found it pitiful that the last time the Gunners lifted the Premier League trophy was during their time, 20 years ago.

"Unfortunately, Arsenal didn't win it this season [and] as a big club every now and again you have to win, you can't always be second, third or fourth," he said.

"We [the 2003/04 side] are still the last Arsenal champions which is a little bit of a pity. It's too long."

Mikel Arteta's main problem next season

It will be difficult to fire Arteta as he already stamped his coaching style on the team and built a team with the players he needs for that system.

He is currently contracted to manage the team until 2025 after signing an extension in 2022.

However, as in any sport, a manager can get fired even in the middle of the season.

He is being criticized for his refusal to shop for a proper striker.

Fans blame the absence of such a player for their failed Champions League run, during which they failed to score enough goals to advance to the semi-finals.

Arteta even stood by his decision to not chase for a striker during one UCL match.

"I don't think so because we're the team that's scored more goals in the Premier League & you're talking about like this," he said.

"We don't have a striker who will score 35-40 goals & we have to live with that."

Several reports say Arsenal and Arteta are changing tune and are now looking for a striker.

The first guy they have their eyes on is Ivan Toney of Brentford.

The problem, though, is they don't see Toney as the best option for now.

"Yeah, I think Arsenal are still stuck deciding on the striker front. But it's clear that that's the kind of profile that they're looking for, and they feel is missing," journalist Ben Jacobs said.

"And along with Benjamin Sesko, they've considered Evan Ferguson and Viktor Gyokeres, but they've ruled out Ivan Toney.

"And even though we hear reports about Arsenal moving for Victor Osimhen, the outlay is so severe that nothing is advancing at this stage on that front."

If the club can find the right striker, which is achieved through a painstaking process, then Arteta's job will be safe.
