The Washington Commanders' team name has been mired in controversy in recent years.

Marjorie Harris, the wife of Commanders owner Josh Harris, has expressed her stance regarding another potential team name change amid Washington fans' dissatisfaction with the current name.

"As you would imagine, everyone has an opinion on the name. Some good, some bad, and some in the middle. I think that we have a lot of work to do. That name issue is going to be on the side for now until we can get things going," she told the media on Wednesday, May 29.

The team had to remove their longstanding Redskins moniker in 2020 due to mounting pressure and criticism regarding the term's racial insensitivity towards Native Americans.

They played as the "Washington Football Team" in 2020 and 2021 before ultimately settling on Commanders, which will likely be the team's name for the foreseeable future

"Quite frankly, I had a whole day in the community. I kept referring to the team as the Commanders. You know what, it sounds pretty good to me. So for now, it's the Commanders," Harris added.

Washington fans dislike the Commanders name

A poll by The Washington Post last April revealed that many fans are not enthusiastic about the new name.

Among local fans, 54 percent disliked or hated the name.

Specifically among local Commanders fans, the sentiment is even more pronounced, with 58 percent stating that they do not like the name.
