The Los Angeles Clippers have locked in one of the best coaches in the league with a long-term deal.
On Wednesday, May 20, the team announced that it has signed head coach Tyronn Lue to a lucrative pact that will keep him coaching at the Intuit Dome until the 2028-29 season.
The 47-year-old tactician inked a five-year contract worth $70 million and will receive an average annual salary of $14 million, according to league insider Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.
Lue has been with the franchise since 2019, as assistant to Doc Rivers in the 2019-20 season before being promoted to head coach in October 2020 following Rivers' departure.
The 2016 NBA champion coach will more than double his salary amid the rising compensation of head coaches around the league, as his previous deal paid him $6.5 million annually.
Tyronn Lue will be one of the highest-paid coaches in the NBA
Lue's $14 million annual salary puts him among the best-paid coaches in the entire league.
The figure ranks as the fourth highest in the NBA, just behind Golden State Warriors Steve Kerr's $17.5 million, San Antonio Spurs' Gregg Popovich's $16 million, and Miami Heat's Erik Spoelstra's $15 million, all of whom are multiple-time NBA champions.
Lue has won two NBA titles as a player with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000 and 2001 and one as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.
