The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be without one of their best players during their organized team activities, which started on Tuesday, May 21, and will last until June 6.
Left tackle Tristan Wirfs has decided not to attend the OTAs due to his discontent with his current contract and a lack of a long-term extension on the table.
The 25-year-old is avoiding the risk of injury by opting out of participating in the OTAs, and he does not intend to change his decision regarding attendance unless he signs a new deal.
According to league insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, neither side has made progress on a new deal.
Wirfs will enter the fifth-year option exercised by the Bucs on his rookie deal, which would see him earn a fully guaranteed $18.244 million in the 2024 season, according to numbers by Spotrac.
Tristan Wirfs has had a successful career in a short span
The Buccaneers selected Wirfs with the 13th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he has earned several accolades despite his short time in the league.
During his rookie season, he started in all of the Buccaneers' regular season and playoff games as they won Super Bowl LV over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Iowa product then earned First Team All-Pro honors in his sophomore season in 2021 and Second Team All-Pro honors in 2022.
He has also been selected to the Pro Bowl in the past three seasons.
