The Los Angeles Lakers have turned to an iconic figure to help them find a new head coach.
The team's head coaching position has been vacant since they parted ways with Darvin Ham after two seasons at the beginning of the month following their first-round elimination in the 2024 NBA Playoffs.
Legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski has emerged as a "respected unofficial resource" for the purple-and-gold franchise, according to league insiders Shams Charania and Jovan Buha of The Athletic.
The 77-year-old has previously coached the Duke Blue Devils from 1980 to 2022 and the United States men's basketball team from 2005 to 2016.
During his tenure with Team USA, Krzyzewski had the chance to coach Lakers stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
The Lakers are reportedly searching for a coach who can command the locker room, ensure accountability among players, continuously strategize for games, and offer a strong sense of structure and organization.
Mike Krzyzewski was on the Lakers' radar in the past
Although receiving lucrative offers, Coach K turned down numerous opportunities to coach in the NBA during his four decades at Duke.
Krzyzewski was previously in contention for the Lakers' head coaching position in 2004 following Phil Jackson's departure.
Lakers GM Mitch Kupchack formally offered a five-year contract worth $40 million and part ownership, but he declined the offer.
