Former MLB star Alex Rodriguez recounted a humorous interaction with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes from the latter's childhood days.
The baseball shortstop revealed that he once imparted misguided advice to the now reigning Super Bowl MVP, which could have hindered Mahomes' current success had he followed it.
"I remember Pat as a young kid, coming to practice with his dad to tee up baseballs for me and my teammates. I distinctly remember giving him the worst advice ever. 'Don't play football. The money's in baseball.' I'm happy to be wrong and glad he didn't listen!," the 14-time MLB All-Star recalled.
Mahomes' father, Pat Mahomes, had a notable career as an MLB pitcher spanning 11 seasons. During the 2001 MLB season, he was teammates with Rodriguez while playing for the Texas Rangers.
At the time of Rodriguez's advice, the Chiefs signal-caller would have been around five to six years old.
The interview with Rodriguez was part of Mahomes' feature in Time magazine's list of the 100 influential people, marking the quarterback's second appearance on the prestigious list.
Patrick Mahomes certainly got the money
Mahomes undoubtedly secured his financial future, taking a cue from Rodriguez's advice, albeit opting for football instead.
The three-time Super Bowl champion signed a 10-year deal valued at $450 million in 2020 to remain with the Chiefs for the rest of the decade.
The agreement is one of the largest sports contracts and the biggest in NFL history.
