The New York Jets have finally taken a step to solve a significant problem that plagued them during the 2023 NFL season.

The team has signed free agent veteran left tackle Tyron Smith to a one-year contract potentially worth up to $20 million with incentives, according to league insider Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The 33-year-old, who had spent his entire 13-year career in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys since the 2011 season, played 14 games for America's Team last season.

Smith has been named to the First-Team All-Pro twice and the Second-Team All-Pro thrice, including the 2023 season.

Additionally, he has been selected to the Pro Bowl eight times and was named to the NFL's All-Decade Team in 2010.

Jets address 2023 problem with Tyron Smith signing

During the 2023 season, the Jets encountered difficulties protecting their quarterbacks. They allowed 64 sacks, ranked 28th in the league, and ultimately finished with the 29th-ranked scoring offense.

The Jets are taking a chance on Smith, believing he still has the potential to excel.

Despite the former USC Trojans player's reputation as one of the NFL's premier offensive linemen in recent memory, he has missed 37 games over the past four seasons. He hasn't completed an entire season since 2015.

However, this doesn't necessarily indicate a decline in his ability to perform at a high level, with his skill never in question amid his health issues.

The Cowboys selected Smith with the ninth overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
