Paris St. Germain has just won the Champions Trophy, their first of the season but instead of exuberant celebrations, the fanbase are talking about the latest Kylian Mbappe transfer news.
Kylian Mbappé led the way for his team by scoring one goal and Lee Kang-in added another to help PSG beat Toulouse 2-0 and win the Champions Trophy.
Shortly after the win, news reports revealed that an adjustment was made on his current contract which he signed in 2022.
Under the new terms, he will no longer receive his bonus. That was a bonus and usually, an employee will take that.
The ESPN report said he "agreed to waive loyalty bonus payments of up to €100 million ($109 million) to protect PSG if he left for nothing."
He will become a free agent this year after he and the team did not arrive at a contract extension last summer.
He is expected to become the top free agent in a list that also includes Adrien Rabot, Thiago, Eric Diem, and Luka Modric.
Waiving the bonuses is meant to protect PSG. As a free agent, he can walk away from the club which will not get anything in return.
What does this mean for PSG?
Mbappe said he is not yet sure of his future and that he does not think about it yet as he is focused on winning games for PSG.
"I haven't made my decision yet. I haven't made a choice," he said.
"With the agreement I had with the president in the summer, my decision is not important as we managed to protect all the parties and preserved the serenity of the club for the challenges to come, which is the most important. So we will say that it [the decision] is secondary."
He also explained that if he could do it today, he would have done so.
If one would rate the chances of him re-signing, the number is low.
The chances of him walking out are high.
He wants the club protected financially once he goes out and that is enough reason to believe that he is just trying not to make it hard for everyone.
Chances of him staying with PSG?
If money is the issue, PSG can provide it. Qatar Sports Investments and chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi can go on a spending spree to keep the biggest name in the club.
Mbappe staying is a possibility.
Maybe there will also be a change of the win if PSG wins the Champions League this season. Bookmakers put their chances of lifting their first major European trophy at 12/1.
The 24-year-old World Cup champion is chasing major trophies and if he can do that with PSG, there is enough reason for him to continue his relationship with the French club.
Real Madrid have openly expressed their interest in the player and they are capable of signing him.
Barcelona, who are struggling right now, shut down Mbappe links saying they can't afford him right now.
Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool might try but as of now, the number of clubs Mbappe can sign with is limited.
