The Seattle Seahawks have implemented multiple changes to their roster as the conclusion of the 2023 NFL regular season approaches.

The Seahawks have placed safety Jamal Adams and wide receiver Dee Eskridge on the injured reserve list and let go of outside linebacker Frank Clark Sr. ahead of their game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 31.

To address the open spots on the 53-man roster, the team elevated three individuals from the practice squad. These include linebacker Patrick O'Connell, safety Ty Okada, and tackle Jake Curhan.

Why is Jamal Adams heading to the injured reserve list?

Before moving to the injured list, Adam missed the last two games due to a knee injury. Due to NFL rules, the 28-year-old must sit out for at least four games before being eligible to return.

Adams has faced a series of injuries over the last two seasons. In the previous year, he played just one game for the Seahawks before tearing his quad tendon in a Week 1 victory against the Denver Broncos, sidelining him for the entire 2022 NFL season.

After his return to action in October 2023 against the New York Giants, which was more than a year since his last game, Adams experienced an accidental knee-to-head impact during the game's initial possession.

As a result, the independent concussion specialist, appointed collaboratively by the NFL and NFLPA, deemed him unfit to continue for the remainder of the game. Upon hearing this decision, he reacted with a strong emotional outburst. However, he has since expressed regret and offered an apology.

End for Jamal Adams in Seattle?

The Seahawks acquired Adams in a trade with the New York Jets ahead of the 2020 NFL season.

The Jets traded Adams along with a 2022 fourth-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks amid a contract dispute. In return, they acquired safety Bradley McDougald, a first-round pick and a third-round pick in the 2021 draft, along with a 2022 first-round pick.

Adams was coming off a stellar season in 2019, earning a spot on the First Team All-Pro and was selected for the Pro Bowl. Throughout the season, he recorded 75 tackles, deflected seven passes, and made one interception-which he returned for a 61-yard touchdown and secured 6.5 sacks, leading all defensive backs in this category.

The safety continued to dazzle for Seattle in his first season, getting selected in his third Pro Bowl game in a row and the Second Team All-Pro. However, injuries began to plague the rest of his stint with the team.

Since signing a four-year extension worth up to $72 million in 2021, Adams will have missed 29 out of 51 regular-season games.

These absences are attributed to various injuries, including a torn shoulder labrum, a quad tendon tear, and subsequent knee soreness. This amounts to nearly 60 percent of the Seahawks' games during that period, showing concerns about his durability.
