The San Francisco Giants' new manager appeared to have already been set even before Bob Melvin was allowed to interview for the vacant team manager position.
In what was reportedly a condensed interview process, the Giants are expected to officially name San Diego Padres’ disgruntled team manager Bob Melvin as their choice to manage the MLB team in 2024, The Athletic, citing sources, reported.
An official announcement is reportedly planned at Oracle Park on Wednesday, October 25.
It was a hardly surprising development since it is no secret that the 61-year-old was reportedly not getting along with Padres general manager A.J. Preller. Melvin was a huge favorite to land the Giants vacant team manager position since the firing of Gabe Kapler, CBS Sports reported.
Homecoming for Bob Melvin
It will be a homecoming of sorts for Melvin, who will ironically be turning 62 years old on Saturday, October 28. He will be returning to the Bay Area, the place where he grew up cheering for the Giants, the Associated Press reported.
“I’m very excited to work with Bob Melvin,” Giants ace Logan Webb said in a text message to the Associated Press. “I’ve heard nothing but fantastic things from everyone that has played for him. Excited to get to meet him, play for him, and learn from him!”
Further details remain scarce on this development. Melvin still has one year remaining in his contract with the Friars and is due $4 million. It remained unclear as of this writing if the Padres will receive compensation once Bob Melvin is officially announced as the Giants’ new team manager.
