The Houston Astros got some good news recently regarding their appeal on the Bryan Abreu suspension. The Astros 1st baseman's suspension has been upheld but can be served at the start of the 2024 regular season.
The 26-year-old pitcher drew the suspension together with an undisclosed fine after it was determined by the league that he intentionally hit outfielder Adolis Garcia of the Texas Rangers with a pitch during Game 5 of the ALCS, MLB.com reported.
Abreu was at a hearing on Monday, October 23, and claimed he did not intentionally hit Garcia. Abreu, Garcia, and Astros manager Dusty Baker were all ejected after the play resulted in a bench-clearing incident, CBS Sports reported.
Also fined for their role in the incident were two inactive pitchers, Matt Bush and Lance McCullers Jr. Both will not be allowed to sit on their respective benches for the remainder of the ALCS.
Huge relief for the Astros
With the suspension of Abreu being deferred, the Astros will get a huge boost, especially since he is one of the best relievers for Houston and will be available for as long as the team continues its run in the playoffs.
The Astros will have to make do with the decision despite saying it made no sense for Abreu to purposely throw at Garcia, especially during a pivotal playoff game.
"I just had in my mind, 'Just keep executing all your pitches, just keep attacking the strike zone, just keep making outs,'" Abreu said.
