The San Diego Padres dropped a huge decision on the future of team manager Bob Melvin, which could have a considerable impact on his potential jump to the San Francisco Giants.
The Friars have reportedly given the 61-year-old manager permission to interview for the Giants' managerial vacancy per Dennis Lin and Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic.
Although San Diego said they wanted to bring Melvin back, not many saw this happening. The reason is the reported tension between the Padres manager and general manager AJ Preller.

In his career, Bob Melvin's record stands at 1,517-1,425.
Melvin is undoubtedly a favorite to take over the managerial duties of the Giants, who fired Gabe Kapler after four years last September, CBS Sports reported.
It should be noted that Melvin is still under contract with the Padres for one more year and is due $4 million, ESPN reported.
Déjà vu for Padres, Giants
Should everything fall into place, Melvin would not be the first Padres manager under contract to jump ship. Bruce Bochy also made a similar jump in 2006, replacing Felipe Alou, per MLB.com.
That move paid off for the Giants after Bochy delivered three World Series to the Giants (2010, 2012, and 2014), NBC Sports reported.
Can Bob Melvin do the same?
Being a three-time Manager of the Year and winning a World Series in 2001, there is a chance that Bob Melvin can replicate the success of Bochy.
Nothing is set in stone for now as to whether the Giants and Melvin can agree to something. But with the circumstances that the California native has with the Padres, it may only be a matter of time before an official deal is sealed.
