Venezuelan baseball player Eduardo Rodriguez has reportedly opted out of his deal with the Detroit Tigers and is trying his luck in the MLB free agency.
The 30-year-old had three years left in the $77 million five-year deal he signed ahead of the 2022 MLB season. However, he will likely attempt to secure a bigger deal in what is shaping up to be an interesting offseason.
Eduardo Rodriguez's stats could be telling. The Venezuelan pitcher is coming off a strong 2023 MLB season where he posted a 13-9 record with a 3.30 ERA and 143 strikeouts across 152 2/3 innings, the New York Post reported.
He joins a loaded free-agent market with Shohei Ohtani, Clayton Kershaw, and Hyun-Jin Ryu, per Bleacher Report. Aside from those players, there is also Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Blake Snell as the debate on who will get the biggest deal rages on.
Rodriguez's injury could be a problem
There is no doubt that Eduardo Rodriguez would be a welcome addition to any MLB team's rotation. But something that could hinder him from landing a huge deal may be his shoulder injury.
Rodriguez sustained the injury in September, forcing him to leave the game that the Tigers lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 8-3.
Although he is opting out, there is still a chance that he could return to Detroit on a different deal. However, it will be interesting if the money on the table will be at least more than the $49 million he would have earned in the final three years of his current deal.
