The New England Patriots suffered another brutal loss for the second week in a row, failing to put up a single point on the scoreboard in a 34-0 defeat to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, October 8, at the Gillette Stadium.
Mac Jones' status as the starting quarterback will likely be the talk of town for the week following his performance, where he completed 12 of 22 passes for 110 yards and threw two interceptions against the Saints.
Despite a subpar showing, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick addressed Jones' status within the team's quarterback hierarchy.
"Yeah, there were other problems; it certainly wasn't all on him," the 71-year-old tactician said when asked if the 2021 Pro Bowl selection will continue to start for the team.
The Patriots decided to take Jones out of the game with 13:03 left in the third quarter, and at that point, New England was trailing 31-0.
The 25-year-old had thrown two interceptions, one of which was returned for a 25-yard touchdown by Saint safety Tyrann Matthieu.
Another blowout loss for New England
A week after Belichick suffered the most lopsided defeat in his coaching career, the Patriots followed it up with the biggest home shutout loss in franchise history, as per ESPN Stats and Information.
This is also the first instance where a team coached by Belichick has allowed 34 points or more in consecutive games and scored three points or fewer in back-to-back games.
