The Texas Rangers received a massive injury setback amid their push for a playoff spot in the final weeks of the regular season.
Veteran pitcher Max Scherzer is set to miss the rest of the regular season after MRI results showed that he sustained a low-grade strain of his right teres major muscle, which is located in the upper arm, according to Rangers general manager Chris Young.
Young added that the eight-time All-Star also won't likely pitch in the playoffs if the Rangers secure their spot in the postseason.
Scherzer left their game against the Blue Jays on Tuesday night after experiencing a right triceps spasm in the sixth inning. The Rangers won the game, 6-3.
"In some ways I was almost relieved that it's not worse. It's not surgery. Talking with the doctors, I fully expect to make a full recovery," the 39-year-old pitcher said.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner arrived in Texas at the end of July before the trade deadline from the New York Mets, amid a fire sale from the latter team following a disappointing season.

Rangers fighting for a playoff spot
Entering Wednesday, the Rangers have an 80-64 win-loss record, good for the second spot in the American League West.
They are only one game behind Division leaders Houston Astros for an outright berth in the postseason.
Texas also holds the second spot in the American League Wild Card standings.
