A few days before their season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, September 9, the San Francisco 49ers' saga with defensive end Nick Bosa came to an end.
The 25-year-old became the highest-paid defensive player and non-quarterback in NFL history after agreeing to a five-year contract extension worth $170 million, including $122.5 million guaranteed, according to league insider Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Bosa will make an average annual value of $34 million, surpassing Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald's $31.7 million.
The 49ers will waive all fines related to Bosa's months-long holdout from all team activities, which included training camp.
The 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is also set to receive a $50 million signing bonus as part of the deal, another record for a defensive player, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
The former Ohio State player was selected by San Francisco in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft with the second overall pick.
Bosa led the league in sacks last season with 18.5 and in QB hits with 48. He also put up 51 combined tackles and two forced fumbles in the 16 games he played in 2022.

Nick Bosa surpasses brother's contract
Bosa's older brother, Joey, signed a five-year extension with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020, which made him the highest-paid defensive player in the league at the time of its signing.
Three years later, Joey is still fourth among all defensive players in terms of the highest annual average of his current deal at $27 million.
