San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy could return to his old self upon recovery, according to sports medicine doctor Jess Flynn.

The final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft suffered a complete tear of his ulnar collateral ligament on his throwing elbow during the January 29 NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles and underwent surgery.

"When he does come back, studies show that you should expect a similar level of play compared to before the injury," the expert stated.

Brock Purdy Ascended From Third-Stringer to Starter

Flynn compared the situation to baseball pitchers who underwent surgery on their UCL, saying that they usually get better.

Their injuries tend to happen over time, wherein the ligament slowly tears, meaning they've been playing with a damaged ligament for a long time. When they get it replaced with something real, their fastball becomes faster.

Being the team's third-string quarterback to begin last season, Purdy rose to a starting role following injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.

He became the first "Mr. Irrelevant," a nickname given to the final pick of the NFL Draft, to throw a touchdown pass in a regular season game.

Purdy contributed to the 49ers' ten-game winning streak last season, wherein they were just one game away from the Super Bowl. He earned the nickname "Mr. Relevant" for his sensational play.
