Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes joined New York Giants owner John Mara in expressing displeasure over the new rules of the National Football League's (NFL) "Thursday Night Football."

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback tweeted a facepalm emoji to express his frustration on the league's announcement that teams can now play two "Thursday Night Football" games in one season instead of the previous rule of being limited to only one.

The new rule further aggravates the issue of the swift turnaround of game schedules from Sunday to Thursday as it cuts in half the players' recovery time. Mara, for his part, said that the Health and Safety Committee and the Competition Committee should have reviewed the new rule before it was put out.

2 Thursday Night Football games ridiculous

Another person who had a lot to say about the new rules was former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin, who said that playing two is ridiculous.

Griffin also took to Twitter to call out the league's sincerity in prioritizing the players' safety, saying, "The NFL is now allowing teams to have TWO Thursday Night Football games per year. A league that continuously says it is all about improving player safety continues to put the health of its players at risk. Playing 1 game with only 3 days rest isn't smart. Playing 2 is RIDICULOUS."

A Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health study published in Science found that former NFL pros die seven years earlier than those playing Major League Baseball. NFL players are also at higher risk of cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative illnesses than their MLB peers.

Another player who expressed his distaste for the new rule was NFL linebacker Devon Kennard, who took to his Twitter account to post, "Two TNF games is AWFUL for the players!"
