There has been rumors of a "The Big Bang Theory" spinoff in the works for the past several months at CBS but the network has been quiet about it. This time, however, CBS has greenlit the production of a spinoff for the popular sitcom entitled "Young Sheldon" that features Sheldon's childhood. Here's everything you need to know about the new spinoff.

Production for "Young Sheldon" is slated to start later this month for a 2017-2018 season which is expected to premiere later this year as reported by Cinema Blend. The spinoff will center around a 9-year-old Sheldon in High School as he tries to fit in with the bullies and the angsty teenagers. Sheldon is arguably the most popular character in "The Big Bang Theory" to which Jim Parsons the actor who played the role won an Emmy award.

"Young Sheldon" will star Iain Armitage as the titular character who is known for his work on HBO's "Big Little Lies." Armitage has shown the acting chops to portray the socially awkward but arrogant Sheldon Cooper as he struggles to fit in High School as well as his overly religious Texas Family. Meanwhile, USA Today reports that Jim Parsons will narrate the show as the older version of Sheldon Cooper.

Zoe Perry will take on the role of Sheldon's mom in "Young Sheldon" as she tries to instill her Christian values to her son who doesn't necessarily agree with her. It's easy to see why Perry was tapped to play the role as she could pass for a younger version of Laurie Metcalf who played as the older mother in "The Big Bang Theory." Perry is known for her roles in Grey's Anatomy, The Family, and NCIS. While her roles tend to be on the drama side, it will be interesting to see how she fares on a comedic role.

Other characters from the series are not confirmed to appear for "Young Sheldon." It's also unclear whether Jim Parsons will make an appearance on the show similar to "How I Met Your Mother." Stay tuned for more updates
