In typical Square Enix fashion, the iconic Japanese developer teases new information about 'Kingdom Hearts 3' without revealing the one thing that everyone is waiting for; the release date. This time, the new information comes in the form of screenshots that highlight the keyblade's new ability.
The screenshot for 'Kingdom Hearts 3' was revealed from the recent MAGIC 2017 event in Monaco, France. It is set in the previously revealed world of Hercules, specifically in Thebes. Sora can be seen battling a giant heartless while holding in what seems to be a shield.
'Kingdom Hearts 3' like all games in the series has Sora using a keyblade to defeat the heartless. So it is surprising to see Sora use a different weapon in his battles against the heartless.
'Kingdom Hearts 3' director Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed that the keyblade now has the ability to change into a lot of things according to Tech.Mic. The screenshot shows the Keyblade turning into a shield but Nomura also mentions that it can also change into a chariot.
Meanwhile, Gamerant reports that the 'Kingdom Hearts 3' keyblade's new ability is actually a new Drive Form called the Guard Form. Guard Form can be used to block powerful attacks such as the giant heartless' rock attack. Sora's health is still full which means that the block was successful in negating the attack's damage.
What's also notable in the 'Kingdom Hearts 3' screenshot is the absence of Donald and Goofy which are Sora's constant party members. This is likely due to Drive Form requiring both party members to fuse with Sora to gain new abilities like the shield.
Judging from the 'Kingdom Hearts 3' screenshot, fans are speculating that the image is a preview of the Coliseum which has been a staple for the series. But upon closer inspection, the image is set in Thebes which was first seen in 'Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep." In the movie Hercules, the protagonist traveled to the city of Thebes to prove his worth as a hero so maybe Sora will be doing the same.
'Kingdom Hearts 3" will be released on the Playstation 4 and Xbox One although no release window has been announced. Expect more screenshots to be revealed as E3 draw near.
