Tennis News: Roger Federer Retirement Not Imminent, Swiss Star Plans Play Until 2019

After surprisingly winning his 18th Grand Slam title and the 2017 Australian Open in January, many people were expecting Roger Federer to announce his retirement. It was the perfect ending to his illustrious career but the Swiss star is planning to play until 2019.

In an interview with the New York Post, Roger Federer revealed that he thought about retiring after defeating longtime rival and friend Rafael Nadal to win his fifth Australian Open championship. However, the feeling he felt was so great that he wants to feel it again.

"I guess in a faraway place it did cross my mind: How could I ever top this? But then again, the joy was so big, and I kept on watching the reaction of my team when I won the match point in Australia and how they were jumping for joy. Unbelievable. So much fun. I feel like I want to go through it again," Roger Federer said.

The 35-year-old star also revealed that he is still recovering from an upper leg injury he suffered against Nadal. He is not yet 100 percent healthy but he is set to return to action next week at the Dubai Duty Free Championships.

And to further prove that he is serious about not retiring anytime soon, Roger Federer signed a three-year deal to play at the Swiss Indoors until 2019 in his hometown of Basel. He began playing at the tournament at the age of 17 against the great Andre Agassi in 1998, as reported by BBC Sport.

Roger Federer missed the majority of last season due to a knee injury but entered 2017 healthy and he proved it at the Australian Open. He also needed luck as World No. 1 Andy Murray and No. 2 Novak Djokovic both suffered upsets in the early rounds.

The 35-year-old legend has won 18 Grand Slam titles including five Australian Opens, one French Open, five US Opens and seven Wimbledon championships. He is even considered by many as the greatest tennis player of all time and fans might see more of him until the 2019 season.
