WTA Tennis News: Serena Williams Gets Back Her No.1 Spot


After beating her sister (Venus Williams) in the Australian Open 2017 by a score of 6-4, 6-4 - Sernea Williams captured the number 1 spot once again in the WTA Rankings which was released on Monday.

Williams overtaken Angelique Kerber the moment she won her 23rd Grans Slam title just this Saturday. This was Serena's 7th Australian Open title. In the finals, Serena had a slow start but somehow, she was able to get into her rhythm to beat her elder sister.

The Williams sisters put out a good match in front of their fans and the expectations did not dissappoint everyone. Serena's 23rd Grand Slam is the most by any player in the open era as her lates achievement surpassed Margaret Court's record in 1973. At the age of 35, Serena also set a record of the oldest female tennis player to win a Grand Slam title as reported by Deadspin.

On the other hand, Kerber - who was the number 1 seeded player - lost to Coco Vandeweghe of USA and was eliminated in the tournament. Vandeweghe won the match with a score of 6-2, 6-3 in a game that clocked in 1 hour and 8 minutes.

Winning here 23rd grand slam and aside from taking back the No.1 ranking (which she lost back in September), Serena experience was made better as she battled her sister and Venus' speech of gratitude made it more special. Venus Williams also made a record as the second oldest Grand Slam finalist in the open era at the age of 36.

The WTA ranking that was given out on Monday that placed Serena at the top with 7.780 points. Just ahead of Angelique Kerber from Germany with 7.115 points. Karolina Pliskova grabbed the 3rd rank with 5.270 points as reported in Times Of India. The list of top 10 players is given below.
