Roger Federer wins Australian Open 2017 final against Rafael Nadal. Federer is now four titles ahead of Nadal and six ahead of Novak Djokovic.
There was an interesting contest between these two as always and the audience enjoyed a lot. Federer beat Nadal 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in a vintage final this Sunday.
As written in CBS Sports, it was the 35-year-old Federer's first major title since Wimbledon in 2012, his first in Australia since 2010, and it reversed the status quo against his nemesis Nadal.
This was the comeback of both players and they worked very hard to reach this point. Federer (17) was returning after six months break because of an injured left knee and on the other hand Nadal (9) was out for a couple of months because of an injured left wrist.
Federer had to take the injury time-out after the fourth set. The fifth set was full of drama and tension. This was Federer's 100 match at the Australian Open.
Both were privileged to reach that level, especially after the comeback. "It's been a different last six months, I wasn't sure I was going to make it but here I am - we made it," Federer said after accepting the trophy.
"I would have been happy to lose too, to be honest. The comeback was perfect as it was. Tennis is a tough sport, there are no draws. If there was going to be one, I would have been happy to have it tonight and share it with Rafa, really."
"I hope to be back next year, of course," said Federer. "I love playing here, I've never missed it, ever since playing here in '98 in the juniors and then qualifying in '99," written in The Telegraph.
Federer's record against Nadal is not so good. He had lost six of the previous eight Grand Slam finals against Nadal and overall he had only won 11 out of their 34 matches. Federer set the record by winning three Grand Slam titles at least five times (Australian Open 5, U.S. Open 5 and Wimbledon 7 titles).
