Serena Williams won the Australian Open 2017 against her elder sister Venus Williams. This is her 23rd grand slam title. She chased Steffi Graf and now she is only one step behind Margaret Court, who had 24 major titles. At the age of 35, Serena is World No. 1 again.
Serena and 36-year-old Venus set Williams finals after eight years. This was the ninth time the American sisters met in the finals. Out of 30 slam finals, Serena had won 23 of them. On the other hand, Venus has 7 grand slam titles in her name.
As written in the previous article, Serena defeated Venus in Australian Open final in 2013. Venus won her last grand slam title at Wimbledon 2008. So, Serena was expected to win this one and as she said in her interview that it is a big thing that her sister is playing till now and reached up to the finals at this age.
In the match, only 20 per cent of the rallies lasted more than four shots. Serena defeated Venus in straight sets, 6-4 6-4 in just 82 minutes and won Australian Open 2017.
As written in The Telegraph, the women's final lacked tension once Serena had closed out the first set. Both sisters were looking to drive the ball into the corners at the earliest opportunity but Serena was faster, stronger and more robust.
After the match, Serena said that in the beginning of the tournament, she asked her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou whether she will be at No. 1 position if she wins. But he denied and she said whatever. Saturday on the court, she was like, "Whoa, really?"
Her coach feels that Serena Williams did not produce her highest level during this tournament. Yet she was able to stay positive and enthused throughout. Her fiancé, Alexis Ohanian might be the reason behind it. The sisters were competitive on the court but when the match ends, it's all about love and family.
