There’s dead weight, and then there’s Geno Smith. If the Jets have any ambitions of returning to the playoffs, they’re better off releasing him in the offseason.

But he’s not alone. Below is a complete list of players New York should sever ties with in 2016.

Geno Smith

Ryan Fitzpatrick isn’t about to lead the Jets to a Super Bowl -- poor guy couldn’t even lead them to the playoffs when he had a chance -- but he’ll surely lead them farther than Geno Smith can. With that being the case, there’s no need for both to be on the roster.

Smith -- as you would expect -- still believes he can start in the NFL. Sitting behind Fitzpatrick for another season isn’t exactly something he’ll be willing to accept. There’s no need to keep that ticking time bomb in your locker room. It does no good for morale. New York is better off saving his roster spot for the actual future of the franchise.

By releasing him, the Jets can save over $1 million in cap space, per Spotrac. It’s money worth saving.

Antonio Cromartie

Antonio Cromartie will cost $8 million in 2016. The Jets can recoup all that simply by releasing him.

Expecting twins after having a vasectomy, Cromartie impregnated more women last season than he intercepted passes (zero). The decision is a no brainer.

Jeremy Kerley

Jeremy Kerley didn’t do well enough in the punt return game last season. He’s virtually useless in the passing game, catching just 16 balls.

Not only would the Jets open a roster spot by releasing him, but they’d save $1.3 million on the cap if they do.
