Don’t let Matthew Stafford scare you. Calvin Johnson isn’t retiring -- not with Jim Caldwell coming back for the 2016 season.

The Lions made the announcement official on Friday.

Calvin Johnson's Fiance Is Worth Retiring For

Just 24 hours prior, Stafford appeared on the Mitch Albom Show on WJR-AM in Detroit. While he wasn’t quick to share the details of his conversations with Johnson, Stafford believed the possibility of retirement was very real.

“I think anytime Calvin says something it’s not for show, I think it’s something serious,” Stafford said, per ESPN. “I think you guys have covered him long enough to know he’s a pretty measured person and everything that he says to the public is a thought-out thing. So in that regard, I’m sure it’s thought out.

“I have had conversations with him and I’m going to keep those between me and him and I respect his privacy and his time to think.”

The Lions Would Make Anyone Consider Retirement

Clearly, the Lions didn’t want Johnson to think anymore. They decided to respect his wishes instead.

“Yeah man, I love him," Johnson said, when asked whether he wanted Caldwell to return next season, per Michigan Live. "Everybody in the locker room would probably say the same thing.

“He commands respect, but he doesn't have to do much. It's just his character guys gravitate toward. Easily, one of my favorite coaches. I've had a couple good ones, and he's one of my favorites."

With a vote of confidence like that, it’s easy to see why the Lions decided to keep Caldwell for next season.

Especially if it helps their chances of their best player returning along with him.
