The Giants are on the lookout for a new coach to replace Tom Coughlin, who won two Super Bowls and roamed the Big Blue sideline for more than a decade. That’s a tougher job to fill than many of the other vacancies in the NFL, so many fans are looking for an established name with comparable credentials.

One of the few coached period who can compare to Coughlin is Ravens coach John Harbaugh, whose team is coming off an injury-ruined 5-11 campaign. The Ravens have not openly made their own Super Bowl champion coach available, but it’s been reported that multiple teams are trying to pry him away.

Top Three Replacements For Tom Coughlin

“Technically, any team can call the Ravens and inquire about the possibility of hiring Harbaugh. The Ravens likely would laugh, utter a few curse words, and slam the phone down, probably in that order. But the prospective employer could, in theory, offer a mountain of picks — enough to at least get Baltimore’s attention,” Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk wrote.

The Ravens aren’t out of bounds to ask for a “mountain” of picks, but the Giants, as desperate as they are for a quality replacement, would be foolish to concede that. The Saints were reportedly making their own head coach, Sean Payton, available for the price of a second-round pick. He has a Super Bowl under his belt as well, and few thought it was wise to spend that on him.

Nick Saban May Be Too Old For The Giants Job

The Giants are also in no position to sacrifice draft picks, regardless of how talented a coach Harbaugh is. New York’s defense ranked 30th in the NFL, and 28th against the pass. This year’s draft must be used to re-stock the roster with talent, not to bring in a head coach. They are also thin on offense, aside from QB Eli Manning and WR Odell Beckham Jr. The Giants mustered just 17 points vs. the Vikings in Week 16, their only tilt of the season without Beckham.

The Giants are either going to have to convince a coach from the past – think Jon Gruden or Bill Cowher – if resume is the deciding factor, or take a chance on someone far less proven than Coughlin was. Bet on the latter, and for Giants fans to feel pretty upset about it for a while.
