Lions coach Jim Caldwell is very much on the hot seat in Detroit, and Thursday night’s coaching meltdown on the final play won’t do him any favors during his year-end evaluation. Green Bay shocked the Lions with a 60-yard Hail Mary touchdown to win the game, and Caldwell had his greatest asset on the bench.

Wide receiver Calvin Johnson reportedly practices stopping Hail Mary attempts regularly, so it made no sense that he was not on the field as Aaron Rodgers, who has arguably the best arm in football, chucked such a pass.

“In that situation, we have a couple of different things that we do,” Caldwell said via MLive.com. “That was one where we were looking more for that pass back and forth kind of thing, because of the range. He (Aaron Rodgers) ran around there so long, moved up, gave himself a chance to get it in the end zone.”

That sound you hear is the wailing of angry Lions fans. And they didn’t read the best part yet.

“We had plenty of guys back there. We had plenty of guys. We just didn’t make the play. They did,” Caldwell said.

Plenty of guys, yes. Calvin Johnson? No. And Johnson had already made one phenomenal play in the end zone – marking his fourth touchdown grab in two weeks – that gave Caldwell the reminder he should’ve needed to put him on the field if there was even the slightest chance of a Hail Mary.
