Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin is set to fight fellow Brooklyn native Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs for the WBA World middleweight title Saturday night at the Barclays Center, but he apparently has his mind elsewhere. Quillin commented on the frustration he feels about the perception that he’s avoiding Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, boxing’s biggest boogeyman.

“I’m like ‘Bro have you ever had a gun pointed at you? That’s something to be real scared of.’ I had that happen to me millions of times, where I felt like my life was on the line. So what would fighting another man and getting another check scare me for?” Quillin told Boxing Scene.

Canelo Backing Down From 'GGG,' Wants Catch Weight

Quillin makes a compelling point, but it’s surprising that he’s discussing Golovkin at all. In April Quillin fought Andy Lee to a surprising draw in a fight in which he was favored, but missed weight. He came back with a scary knockout of Michael Zerafa, but the win did little to bolster his image because Zerafa was outclassed and undersized from the opening bell. Against Jacobs, he fights a flawed but dangerous opponent. Jacobs (30-1, 27 KO), is one of the biggest pure punchers in the weight class and has won his last 10 fights by knockout or stoppage.

Quillin commented at length about his experience with Golovkin, comments about him made by Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez, and the type of purse he needs to make the bout happen. “The fight has got to be worth so much money,” Quillin said about being worth his trouble. “When it’s time to fight him just pay me what I want.”

Three Middleweight Opponents for Golovkin Following David Lemieux KO

Kid Chocolate was careful not to disparage Golovkin as a fighter though. “Is he s***ty? No he’s a good fighter. I’m very thankful I got to spar him in the ring, because coming where I’m coming from you don’t have many opportunities like that.”

Quillin must focus more on the opportunity he has on Saturday, or it will be Jacobs fielding questions about a potential Golovkin fight between two of boxing’s premier knockout artists.
