Former NBA star Lamar Odom, who was in a coma as recently as Oct. 14 following a near-fatal overdose in a Las Vegas brothel, is alive but certainly not well. Odom is alert, but incontinent, according to RadarOnline.

One source familiar with Odom’s recovery said that besides teaching him how to walk again, incontinence has been the most difficult hurdle to overcome. “He has been unable to control his bladder muscles and the urge to go. He refuses to wear an adult diaper, and is going through numerous pairs of underwear daily.”

While his recovery has been slow going, Odom holds out hope that improvement is on its way. Doctors do believe that he will be able to overcome the incontinence, although the source said that this ongoing issue has been very embarrassing for him. Radar reports that a laundry service has been cleaning the underwear daily and returning it the next day directly to his room.

Odom “has tried to hide the incontinence from visitors as it’s obviously very embarrassing for him. Everyone has been very supportive and no one has joked about it. It’s just terribly humbling and sad to see Lamar struggling.”

The Odom of today is a stark contrast from the lanky former Sixth Man of the Year, whose uncommon shooting and dribbling made him a precursor to today’s pace-and-space style of play. Odom was reportedly training hard for an NBA comeback at the time of his overdose, which is now out of the question. There is hope that he can leave the hospital soon, however.

“Lamar hopes to be out of Cedars before Christmas and will continue getting outpatient treatment,” the source told Radar.
