Staub played nine seasons with the Mets but had stints with other ballclubs such as the Colt.45s/Astros, Expos, Tigers and Rangers.

Among his list of achievements included being the only major league player to have 500 hits with four different teams. He is also among the elite few players who were able to hit home runs before turning 20 and was 284 knocks short of reaching the 3,000-hit milestone.

Staub formally retired at the age of 41 in 1985 and was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame a year later.

Prior to the heart attack, Staub was at the Met's home ballpark of Citi Field. He is well-loved by Mets fans and even has a foundation that raised money for the families of New York police and firefighters who were killed in the line of duty.

Right now, Staub’s family is requesting for everyone to respect his privacy as he tries to recover from this untimely episode. With Staub recovering, a man who claims to be a close family friend (Stephen Marro) has started a GoFundMe page to help raise money for the former ballplayer's flight back home.

According to Marro, Staub will need a medical plane that would cost $60,000 to transport the 71-year-old baseball great.

As of this writing, the cause has reportedly raised $3,000 in 20 hours.
