Boston Celtics forward Jared Sullinger has been arrested on domestic abuse charges stemming from a Saturday night incident involving his girlfriend, according to the Boston Globe.

Sullinger, 21, turned himself into Waltham police just before daybreak on Tuesday and was formally charged with assault and battery, malicious destruction of property and witness intimidation after the incident. He has yet to be arraigned and is due in Waltham District Court later today, the newspaper reported.

Police identified Sullinger's girlfriend as DeAnn Smith and indicated she was not charged.

Sullinger averaged 6 points and 5.9 rebounds for Boston during his rookie year before a back injury prematurely ended his season at just 45 games. With longtime mainstays Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce traded to Brooklyn during the offseason, the Celtics are expecting key contributions from Sullinger this season.

Under new coach Brad Stevens, the 6-9, 260 pound bruiser figures prominently in a rebuilding core that also includes Rajon Rondo, Jeff Green Avery Bradley and rookie Kelly Olynyk. While at Ohio State, he averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds over two seasons, culminating in him being selected with the 21st pick in the 2012 NBA draft by Boston.

Coming out of high school, Sullinger was rated as the No. 2 player in the class of 2010 by ESPN. During his senior year, he led Northland High school to a perfect 21-0 season and a No. 1 national ranking, averaging 25 points and 12 rebounds in being named a McDonald's All-American.
