Manchester City were knocked out of the League Cup by Aston Villa 4-2, while Chelsea cruised to a 6-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Everton also suffered a defeat in the third round, going down to Championship side Leeds United as Wigan beat West Ham 4-1. There were also victories for Swansea, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Southampton, Bradford and Swindon.

Mario Balotelli gave City the lead in the 27th minute, but were pegged back by a Gareth Barry own goal. City then looked like they had found the winner when Aleksandar Kolarov scored, however, Villa refused to give up, equalizing with 20 minutes to go through Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The game went into extra time, and Charles N'Zogbia gave the lesser fancied side the lead, with Agbonlahor completing his double with a nice strike two minutes from time.

"We were unlucky because we had chances but we conceded goals which we made mistakes on and they deserved to go through," a disappointed Roberto Mancini said after the game.

"I'm disappointed with the result, Aston Villa are a good team but we didn't play well.

"Our play is not quick, we want to take one touch too many -- this is not good.

Mancini added: "Conceding goals is a real problem, we need to work with our defenders because we aren't defending well at the moment.

"Also, to play after just 48 hours rest is very difficult -- we changed a lot of players but I think that when the situation is like this, we can do nothing but understand our mistakes and think about how we can get back to our best in the future."

At Stamford Bridge, goals from Gary Cahill, Ryan Bertrand, Juan Mata, Oriol Romeu, Fernando Torres and Victor Moses gave the Blues an impressive win.

"If you show complacency and disrespect to the opposition you pay the price," Chelsea assistant manager Eddie Newton said. "We focused on the game, dealt with the matters at hand and we got a very good result and performance.

Cesar Azpilicueta, Lucaz Piazon and Victor Moses made their first starts for the club and Newton was happy with their performance. "They did well, and we knew they would," he said. "They're good players and we see them do it in training all the time.

"Lucas has been fantastic through the youth system and adapted very quickly in training, making a very good account of himself. He deserved it today and I hope he gets plaudits for his performance because he deserved it, as did Victor Moses and Azpilicueta."
