This is not what you expect when you attend a baseball game.
Sure, there is an element of risk and danger to everyday life, and we all have a basic concept of how hard these baseballs are being pitched and being hit. However, there also is an unspoken sense of security we taken for granted, that as long as we're in the stands and they're on the field, nothing bad can happen to us.
Unfortunately, one Pittsburgh Pirates fan learned the hard way that that is not always true.
The Pirates were hosting the Chicago Cubs on Monday. At point during the night's proceedings, Starlin Castro fouled off a pitch from A.J. Burnett, sending it straight back behind home plate and into the netting.
However, this fan was standing too close to the netting, and the ball was traveling too fast. And as a result this happened (warning: potentially upsetting content below):
A scary moment here in the 2nd as a fan is hit with a foul ball. Our thoughts and prayers are with her tonight. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) April 21, 2015
In total the game was delayed for more than 20 minutes as paramedics responded to the collapsed woman in her row. She was eventually taken off with a stretcher.
Just a scary, scary scene all around and we hope we're not alone in hoping she's okay.
