The first day of the 2015 Masters came to a close on Thursday, with Jordan Spieth taking a three-stroke lead.

Ernie Els, Charley Hoffman, Justin Rose and Jason Day are all tied for second and round out the top five. Below is recap of the first day's events (via PGA Tour).

What They're Saying

Jordan Spieth: "I certainly played well. I'm excited how I struck the ball."

Jason Day: "I didn't realize I was going to rattle off five in a row. It was a good stretch of holes. Obviously you want to try and stay with the lead, but you're just trying to play yourself somewhere into contention to Sunday's back nine. That's where it kind of all happens."

Phil Mickelson: "I relax a little bit because I don't have to be as perfect. I can get away with a few errant shots and still salvage pars, knowing that it's tough to really pull away from the field on this golf course now because there's so many holes that have become tougher pars as opposed to birdie holes in the past. It's very difficult to go shoot a really low score, and that means that par on any hole is not a bad score, and I feel like I can get away with a couple of loose ones and rely on my short game."

Stats of the Day

Justin Rose, Kevin Streelman, Billy Horschel, Rory McIlroy and Zach Johnson all hit 92.86 percent of their fairways, while Matt Kuchar finished with the most putts (24).
